The Divided Soul: Angels, Demons & the Struggle Within

A solitary, bare-chested man stands with fabric wrapped around his waist, his arms relaxed and his head turned toward the right of the image. A dark, torn batlike wing extends to the left, while a long feathered angel wing opens to the right. Both wings emerge from the same figure, whose light and shadow are shaped by translucent blood-red washes and precise pen-and-ink contours.

Rather than placing good and evil in separate bodies, the painting gives one man the capacity for both. The opposing wings suggest the daily tension between mercy and self-interest, restraint and desire, generosity and the temptation to dominate. His turn toward the feathered wing hints at attention rather than a completed victory: the moral life remains a practice of choosing. The still stance gives this internal struggle a contemplative dignity.
